Contextualization
With the discovery of the new world by Christopher Columbus, European countries competed against each other to acquire new territory and expand their reach over the growing world. The spread of European peoples across the Atlantic resulted in the Columbian Exchange and with the exchange came new diseases in the continent that ravaged the natives. Europeans were pushed from the old world by religious conflicts and pulled by the allure of the environment and the resources that could be reaped from it, such as the desire for gold and precious metals. This desire was reflected in the start of the first successful colony, Jamestown. They experience the three D's Although the gold didn't pan out for the colony, the crop of tobacco allowed for the colony to flourish and pave the way to the next colonies.
