Contextualization
The relationship between England and the colonies begins to spindle as the imbalance of power becomes clearer and clearer from the utilization of mercantilism and acts like the Navigation Acts. Britain had been hands off, but the ending of the French and Indian war also bought the end of salutary neglect which allowed for the colonies to become self-sustaining and self-governing. The sudden shift from seemingly independent colonies to being controlled made tensions rise. The Enlightenment also attributed to new democratic ideals with the Great Awakening, seen in the colonies, which distanced them from England. These differing ideals lead the colonies to question their representation in British Parliament which planted the seed to revolution, the acts passed further rooted it within their communities.
