Contextualization
This era starts with a large shift in the powers of the nation, from Federalists to the Democratic Republicans with the Revolution of 1800 (Jefferson's election). The nation made quick work to define itself from Britain with territorial growth and expedition, demographic shifts, and economic growth. The reformation period made many changes for more accessible suffrage, woman's rights, schools, prisons, and asylums. While there was much change in this period, there were also conflicts with the natives and discrimination toward the immigrants seeking solace in the newly freed nation. The rights for the common man excluded many within the borders such as the Natives, women, and African Americans.

H - The US is beginning to expand westward with the Louisiana Purchase and the Louis and Clark Expedition. Manifest Destiny was the God given right of the states to expand westward throughout the North American continent. This is exhibited through the Land Ordinance of 1785, North West Land Ordinance of 1787, the Adams-Onis Treaty with the acquiring of Florida, and the Oregon Country with the trail of pioneers it pioneered.
P - This is from the point of view of the states who believed their rights to expansion were God given. They were to expand no matter what was in their way.
P - This displays how Manifest Destiny guided the pioneers and other states folk on their conquest of the western territory and how their culture followed their path.

H - The temperance movement was advocating the reduction of alcohol consumption during the antebellum reform period. This movement was largely lead by women whose husbands often came home drunk and couldn't take care of the kids or themselves and would get violent with domestic violence.
P - The artist advocates this movement and sees it as a noble cause that's defending the liberty of many Americans who suffer from domestic abuse or to protect others from the vile substance of alcohol. P - This illustrates that the "Holy War" was a cause worth fighting for, to defend the innocent women and men victim to alcohol abuse and abuse otherwise. |
